Dancers

Em's Spotlight, a non-profit foundation was started in memory of Emily, whose dream was to bring the joy of dance to children with limited opportunities.  She believed all children should have the chance to experience dance not just the privileged, long-legged beauties.  Her dream has turned into a foundation that gives children with limited opportunities the possibility to make a dream come true through several dance programs.  Free dance lessons for children who attend the Upper Room Summer Program, Special Needs Classes and The Bridge Home for Children, a refuge for children who have been abused, is our key program.  A dance attire loan program for dancers and church groups who are starting dance programs in their community, aid children whose families are experiencing financial difficulties.

Learning dance steps is but one aspect of this program.  Trying something so completely different and stepping outside the box takes courage.  The children have an opportunity to work together as a team without having the expectation of being athletic.  Dancing may be the only exercise some of our children experience. Many of our dancers have very little exposure to the arts.  Our program opens a new world to them. Our teachers encourage input from the children for the choreographing and self-expression in response to the music is rewarded.  Often a child that has not experienced success in school can excel in dance class. Having a costume made or fitted just for them and then going through the process of being a “model for a day” when the photographer works his magic and takes their pictures making each child feel special.  Certainly their self-esteem is heightened. Going through their recital; the practices, costumes, excitement of going on stage does wonders for building their character.  I have seen dancers backstage reluctant to go on stage however following their performance and the applause we can’t get them off! These boys and girls are able to bust through their inhabitations, be creative, free spirited and shining bright for all to see.  But possibly of more significance, a door is opened for the individual they can become. Many benefits come from experiencing the joy of dance. Em's Spotlight believes all should have the opportunity to explore the experience.
Em's Spotlight

Emily Silverman felt most alive when she was dancing and for nearly 17 years dance became a constant focus and inspiration in her life. Early in her life she knew her mission would involve sharing her passion for dance with others. At age 19 in 2003 a car crash took her life.

Her family was committed to bring her dream to reality. The results: dance lessons where everyone feels welcomed, no matter what their talent, shape or ability to pay.

Em's Spotlight has grown to encompass an entire community. You can join in the fun of changing Emily's passion for dance into opportunities for other. Just click on the donor section or the volunteer section. We would be glad to share the fun!
